 Selena Quintanilla Perez (Spanish pronunciation (Spanish pronunciation: [se'lena kinta'ni April 16, 1971 – March 31, 1995) was an American Tejano singer. Selena was known as the "Queen Tejano music", her contribution to fashion and music helped make her one of the most famous Mexican-American entertainers of all time. In 2020, Billboard magazine put her in third position in their ranking of "Greatest Latino artists of All Time", based on both Latin albums as well as the Latin chart of songs. In her selection of clothes media outlets dubbed her the Tejano Madonna. Her fashion choices makes her among the most renowned Latin artists. Quintanilla and Suzette Quintanilla. In the 80s, she was often criticised and refused bookings at venues across Texas for singing Tejano music, a genre of music that is dominated by males. Her popularity grew when she received the Tejano Music Award as Female Vocalist-of-the year in 1987. The award was won nine times. The singer was signed to EMI Latin in 1989. Her debut album was self-titled and released the following year. Her brother became her main music producer and the songwriter. Entre a Mi Mundo (1992) hit the top of the charts at 1 on the US Billboard Regional Mexican Albums Chart for eight months in a row. Critics called it the "breakthrough record" of her career due to its commercial chart-topping success. One of the songs on it, "Como la Flor", became one of her most popular song titles. Live! Live! In 1994, she came out with Amor Prohibido, which became one of the top-selling Latin albums in the United States. The album was widely praised for being the reason behind Tejano music's first marketable era because it became one the most well-known Latin music subgenres at the time.
